Former New York Yankees prospect Estevan Florial once embodied the kind of raw promise that makes prospect lists and winter conversations hum.
The ex-Yankees outfielder, long labeled a five-tool talent, has now signed with Dorados de Chihuahua for the 2027 Mexican League season after a productive 2026 campaign that took him from Leones de Yucatán to Caliente de Durango.
The 28-year-old arrives in Chihuahua with numbers that recall the tools that first drew New York’s attention. Across 87 games last season he hit .293 with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs and 26 stolen bases, slugging .522.
After the midseason move to Durango, the production sharpened: in 60 games he batted .332 with 13 homers, 39 RBIs and 19 steals, posting a .612 slugging percentage. At the Mexican League level, the power-speed combination that once made him a high-ranking prospect is still visible.
That ranking was once very high. In 2017 Arizona Fall League manager Jay Bell said Florial was as close to a five-tool player as anyone in the game.
The numbers that year, at age 19 across two Class A stops, backed the praise: .298 with a .372 on-base percentage and .479 slugging mark, 13 home runs and 23 steals in 110 games.
A broken hamate bone the following season required surgery and interrupted a climb that at one point placed him as high as the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, complete with comparisons to Bernie Williams.
He still reached the majors in August 2020 at 22, but the opportunities never stacked up. Across parts of four seasons he appeared in only 48 games and 115 at-bats before New York traded him to Cleveland after 2023 for pitcher Cody Morris.
That deal came after one of Florial’s best minor-league years, a 2023 Triple-A season in which he hit .284/.380/.565 with 28 homers and 25 steals in 101 games.
Cleveland gave him a longer look in 2024. The results did not follow: .173 with three home runs in 98 at-bats. His career major-league line sits at .192 with a .291 on-base percentage, four home runs and eight steals.
A year in South Korea with the Hanwha Eagles in 2025 produced .271, eight homers, 29 RBIs and 13 steals in 65 games, again showing the same blend of extra-base power and baserunning when he played regularly.
Getting back onto a major-league roster after leaving affiliated ball has proven difficult, especially as the calendar moves on. Florial turns 29 in November.
For Yankees fans, he remains one of the organization’s more intriguing what-ifs, a player whose tools never quite translated in the Bronx.
In Mexico, he is still a useful, athletic outfielder who can impact a game in several ways. Chihuahua is betting that version of Florial is enough.
