Yankees Acquire Intriguing Pitcher in Trade Proposal With Giants

The New York Yankees definitely need more starting pitching thanks to a season-ending injury to Gerrit Cole and with Luis Gil being sidelined for the first few months of the year.

The Yankees did get a recent boost with Clarke Schmidt returning to the rotation, but with both Marcus Stroman (who is now on the injured list due to a knee injury) and Carlos Carrasco both struggling, New York definitely needs some more arms.

Well, Ryan Garcia of Empire Sports Media has proposed a trade, suggesting the Yankees send infielder Oswald Peraza to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mason Black.

“As for the Yankees, an arm that could interest them is right-hander Mason Black, who has a four-pitch mix with solid command over his entire arsenal,” Garcia wrote. “He has two different kinds of fastballs in a four-seamer and sinker alongside two different sliders with a sweeper and gyro slider, and that allows him to handle both left-handed and right-handed batters.”

Black saw brief MLB action last season, pitching to the tune of a 6.44 ERA over nine appearances and eight starts. He registered an alarming 1.679 WHIP and tallied 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

The 25-year-old has been solid in the minor leagues for the Giants, posting a 3.74 ERA and 10.8 K/9 rate over the course of four years in San Francisco’s system. The former third-round pick is certainly not a stalwart, but that’s probably all the Yanks can expect to get in return for Peraza.

Once a top prospect, Peraza has failed to materialize, although he did make New York’s big-league roster this year. Known more for his glove than his bat, Peraza is slashing .217/.250/.435 with one home run and three RBI across 24 plate appearances thus far in 2025. He owns a lifetime .768 OPS in the minors.

The Yankees would surely like to swing bigger on a pitcher, which is why many have named Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara as a potential target for them. However, New York may not be willing to meet the Marlins’ probably lofty asking price.

If it comes to that, the Bronx Bombers may have no choice but to settle for auxiliary options, and Black could definitely represent an interesting piece for renowned pitching coach Matt Blake.
