The New York Mets may look pretty good on paper heading into the 2025 MLB season, particularly after adding Juan Soto in free agency. However, they actually have some significant problems.
The biggest of all is their starting rotation, which will be featuring Clay Holmes—a converted reliever—as their opening-day starter. Yes, Kodai Senga is healthy, and Sean Manaea is making his way back from injury, but the fact that Holmes is getting the start from Day 1 is concerning.
As a result, the Mets may be strong in the market for a starting pitcher in the coming months, and they may want to consider acquiring another arm promptly if they want to come out on top in what should be a difficult NL East division.
Well, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has concocted an interesting trade idea for New York, where it would land left-hander Jordan Montgomery in a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rymer has the Mets sending outfielder Starling Marte to the Diamondbacks in a swap of bad contracts.
“The Mets absolutely have an offense worthy of a World Series run. But the pitching…well, it’s not good,” Rymer wrote. “… Pickings are slim on the trade market as aces go, but Montgomery at least offers readily available innings. And maybe, just maybe, some upside as well.”
Montgomery signed a two-year, $47.5 million deal with Arizona last offseason, with the second year being a $22.5 million player option. He exercised it after a brutal 2024 campaign in which he pitched to the tune of a 6.23 ERA while logging a nightmarish 1.650 WHIP over 25 appearances and 21 starts.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that the 32-year-old posted a 3.20 ERA the year prior and registered three straight campaigns of sub-4.00 ERA ball between 2021 and 2023. He also helped lead the Texas Rangers to a World Series in 2023, recording a 2.90 ERA over six outings and five starts in the playoffs.
It’s also not like New York would be giving up anything of real significance in Marte, and let’s be honest: Steve Cohen clearly has no issue shelling out some money.
