The New York Mets made a quiet organizational move as they opened a heated three-game set against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

While the clubs traded blows on the field—the Yankees taking Friday’s opener 6-4 and the teams meeting again Saturday afternoon—the Mets confirmed they had released 18-year-old right-hander Arturo Sevilla.

The transaction itself occurred before the series started, but it only appeared on the official minor-league log once the Subway Series was already underway.

Sevilla signed with the Mets as an amateur free agent on January 18, 2025, out of Zapopan, Mexico. Born November 15, 2007, he was assigned to the Dominican Summer League Mets Orange shortly after putting pen to paper.

His time in the system was interrupted when the club placed him on the 60-day injured list on July 6, 2025; he was activated four months later, on November 6.

This season, he remained on DSL rosters until the release. Public records list no pitching statistics from his tenure, leaving the reasons for the decision largely internal.

The timing of the announcement, coming amid a rivalry series that still draws national attention even in a lost year, underscores how quietly clubs can reshape their lower-level rosters.

For a franchise that has spent recent seasons mixing high-profile acquisitions with patient development of international teenagers, letting go of a player still months away from his 19th birthday is a reminder that organizational depth is constantly being reassessed.

On the field, the Mets entered the weekend at 68-79.

Barring an extraordinary late surge, their 2026 season will end without October baseball. After the Yankees series, they return home to face the Baltimore Orioles and then the Philadelphia Phillies.

Releases of this kind rarely generate headlines, but they form part of the yearly housekeeping that every club performs as September rosters and winter planning take shape.

Sevilla now becomes a free agent at an age when many pitchers are still refining command and building innings. Whether another organization offers him a chance will depend on scouting reports the public never sees.

For the Mets, the move is one more small adjustment in a season that has already closed the door on division hopes and is rapidly closing the door on the postseason.
