Mets Could Be Losing Patience With Former Top Prospect

The New York Mets entered the 2025 MLB season with Brett Baty as their starting second baseman thanks to Jeff McNeil beginning the year on the injured list with an oblique strain.

A former top prospect, Baty was heralded for his bat in the Mets’ minor-league system, slashing .283/.382/.507 across five minor-league campaigns in New York.

However, his big-league production has not even resembled what he has achieved in the Mets’ farm system, as he owns a lifetime .210/.274/.317 slash line since entering the majors in 2022.

Yes, the sample size is relatively small, as that has come across 629 plate appearances, which is essentially akin to one full season. But at some point, Baty needs to start showing something.

He certainly hasn’t done that thus far in 2025, as he is hitting a paltry .129 with no homers and zero RBI. This has John Wolff of Rising Apple wondering if Luisangel Acuna could ultimately supplant him.

“Bit by bit, Acuna is showing the tools that make him hard to ignore and in the growing contrast with Baty, it’s becoming easier to see which direction the Mets might be leaning,” Wolff wrote.

Wolff added that New York doesn’t have to make a decision today, but that when the time comes, the Mets may ultimately choose Acuna over Baty.

“He’s not running away with the job—but compared to Baty, he’s at least moving forward,” added Wolff. “And in a season where opportunity matters just as much as production, that might be all it takes to tilt the balance.”

Like Baty, Acuna is also a former top prospect, as he was ranked 66th by Baseball America heading into last season. A rough campaign at Triple-A Syracuse (.654 OPS over 587 plate appearances) certainly caused his stock to dip, but it’s not exactly like Baty has been taking advantage of his opportunities.

We’ll see if the Mets ultimately decide to make a change once McNeil gets healthy.
