The New York Mets enter Friday night’s meeting with the Philadelphia Phillies looking to even a series that began with a loss.
Before first pitch, the club posted a lineup that immediately drew attention: Mark Vientos is in it, batting fifth and serving as designated hitter, via Underdog MLB.
That placement is notable because Vientos has barely been seen since he returned from the injured list a couple of weeks ago. A stretch of quiet nights on the bench followed an already inconsistent year at the plate, and questions about his role on a contending roster have grown louder.
Seeing his name in the middle of the order therefore registers as a small but clear vote of confidence, or at least a last look before the schedule tightens further.
The rest of the card is familiar. Francisco Lindor leads off at shortstop, Juan Soto is in left, Bo Bichette handles third, and Cedric Benge occupies right field. Behind Vientos sit Austin Ewing in center, Marcus Semien at second, Brett Baty at first, and Luis Torrens behind the plate. Zack Thornton takes the mound.
It is a group built to score, and the Mets are asking Vientos to supply the kind of extra-base damage that once defined him.
That version of Vientos appeared in 2024, when he broke out and looked like a fixture. The 2026 version has been harder to pin down.
In 81 games and 254 at-bats, he is hitting .217 with 13 home runs and 39 RBI. His OPS+ sits at 85 and his bWAR is a minus-1.0. The power is still there in flashes; the consistency is not.
Those numbers help explain why playing time evaporated after the IL stint and why every at-bat now carries extra weight.
Friday’s assignment as DH gives him a chance to swing without the defensive variables that have sometimes complicated his nights.
A couple of extra-base hits or even a productive ground ball in a scoring situation would quiet some of the chatter, at least for a few days.
A quiet night would only reinforce the sense that the Mets may soon have to decide whether his roster spot is better used elsewhere.
Either way, the lineup announcement itself is the story of the afternoon. After weeks of limited opportunities, Vientos is back in the middle of a Mets order that needs production as it tries to salvage a series in Philadelphia.
How he fares will be watched closely, not only for what it means tonight but for what it suggests about the rest of his season.
