There have been a lot of New York Knicks rumors revolving around the center position. A lot of the focus has been on Isaiah Hartenstein, who is set to hit free agency. But, Mitchell Robinson is also being brought up recently.
The Knicks had the best center tandem in the NBA during the 2023-24 season. Mitchell Robinson got off to a historic start on the boards before an ankle injury knocked him out of the lineup for 50 games.
In stepped Hartenstein, who thrived as a starter. He provided an impact defensively, producing at one of the highest levels in the NBA. Hartenstein also raised the ceiling of the Knicks’ offense because he offered more than his counterpart.
Heading into the 2024 NBA offseason, Knicks rumors have swirled about Hartenstein’s future with the team. The Oklahoma City Thunder were mentioned as a potential suitor to poach him away.
However, in a recent update from Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, it sounds as if Mitchell Robinson could be on the move. If recent Knicks rumors come true, a shake-up is coming to New York’s depth chart in the middle.
“Hartenstein, at this moment, is now generally expected to return to New York, as the Knicks have contacted opposing teams about moving Mitchell Robinson, sources said,” Fischer wrote.
If Hartenstein is going to return, likely on a maximum four-year, $72 million deal, moving Mitchell Robinson becomes a logical next move. Currently the longest-tenured Knicks player, injuries have made it difficult to rely on him.
Mitchell Robinson has missed double-digit games in all but one of his NBA seasons. Twice, he has managed to play in only 31 games. A game-changer defensively and on the glass, and the Knicks would love to keep him around.
But, retaining everyone this offseason is a virtual impossibility. It will be interesting to see what other Knicks rumors pop up, as some changes are going to occur to the depth chart.
