Plenty of New York Knicks rumors have already popped up in the last few weeks. Since being eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, focus has shifted to the team’s roster for 2024-25. One player mentioned previously has been Donovan Mitchell.
The Knicks have some work to do in free agency, as several key players are hitting the market. OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein are garnering the most attention, but Alec Burks and Precious Achiuwa are also free agents.
Depending on what they do with Bojan Bogdanovic, who has a non-guaranteed deal, he could be a free agent as well. If he isn’t released, you can expect him to be involved in plenty of Knicks rumors when it comes to potential trades.
Bogdanovic has one of the several tradeable contracts the Knicks could look to build a trade package with. Along with their draft capital, New York will be a buyer in the trade market. The question is, who will they look to target?
There is one player you can count out from being a target any longer; All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers. For the last two years, speculation has run rampant that the Knicks wanted to add Mitchell to their backcourt.
According to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, those Knicks rumors centered around Mitchell are no more. “The Donovan Mitchell to New York ship has sailed,” Scotto said during a podcast with Knicks beat reporters Ian Begley and Stefan Bondy.
It wasn’t long ago that many Knicks rumors would have stated that Mitchell was the likeliest All-Star to end up in New York City. But, things have changed as Mitchell could make a long-term home in Cleveland.
Two offseason ago, Donovan Mitchell was the target No. 1 for Leon Rose. But, with the emergence of Jalen Brunson as a leading star in the backcourt, the need for a lead guard is lessened. Instead, New York could shift its focus elsewhere, seeking out a superstar upgrade that better fits the roster.
