The New York Jets added veteran linebacker Troy Reeder to the 53-man roster Tuesday, their first roster move after a 20-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers.
NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY reported the promotion, writing, “Sources: The #Jets are singing LB Troy Reeder to the 53-man roster.”
Reeder had been on the practice squad since late August after a brief summer stay with the Detroit Lions.
The 32-year-old linebacker is listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware in 2019 after earlier time at Penn State and immediately stuck with the Los Angeles Rams.
Reeder won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams after the 2021 season. He spent his first three years in Los Angeles, played the 2022 season with the Chargers, had a short offseason stint with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023, then returned to the Rams for three more seasons.
Career totals through 2025 show 106 games and 38 starts, with 335 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, five sacks, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and 12 pass deflections, according to Pro Football Reference and matching season logs on ESPN and CBS Sports.
Those same records credit him with more than 2,100 defensive snaps and about 1,775 special teams snaps. That dual-role background is a large part of why New York kept him around after roster cuts.
The Jets are 1-1. They opened with a 23-10 win at Tennessee, then dropped a home game in which they led 17-7 in the fourth quarter before Green Bay forced overtime and won 20-17.
New York managed only 67 rushing yards on 27 carries in that loss. Breece Hall finished with 29 yards on 16 attempts.
Two linebackers left the Packers game and did not return: Francisco “Kiko” Mauigoa with a quadriceps injury and Marcelino McCrary-Ball with an ankle injury. Defensive lineman David Onyemata also exited with a groin issue.
Head coach Aaron Glenn did not give a detailed injury update immediately after the game. He said Monday that more information would come Wednesday.
Signing Reeder to the active roster requires a corresponding move. One possibility is placing an injured linebacker on injured reserve, which would sideline that player at least four games. The team has not announced any such transaction.
The Jet Press posted on X: “Injuries to McCrary-Ball and Mauigoa probably accelerated this, but it seemed like the likely path when he was signed last month. Reeder is an experienced vet who has played a lot of football, particularly on special teams.”
Reeder’s best statistical season came in 2021, when he started 10 games and recorded 91 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. In 2020 he had 81 tackles and three sacks. Recent years have featured more special teams work and fewer defensive snaps.
New York’s linebacker group still features veterans Demario Davis and Jamien Sherwood. Depth behind them thinned quickly after Week 2. Reeder now gives the staff an experienced option on defense and coverage units.
The promotion does not guarantee a large defensive snap share. It does give Glenn another player who has started games, played in the postseason and logged heavy special teams minutes across seven NFL seasons.
Further injury details and any official corresponding roster move were still pending Tuesday afternoon.
