There may not be a team in the NFL that is more in win-now mode than the New York Jets. Their title window will only be open as long as Aaron Rodgers is on the roster, which could be for only a year or two more.
With that in mind, the front office should be aggressive in pursuing upgrades to ensure they are in the best position possible to contend. Adding another weapon to the passing offense could certainly help.
Over at Bleacher Report, Alex Kay has pitched the idea of the New York Jets acquiring Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers. What could it take for Gang Green to acquire the emerging star wide receiver? Kay suggested that New York sent first and second-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to San Francisco in exchange for Brandon Aiyuk.
“While Gang Green already boasts a solid receiver’s room headlined by Garrett Wilson, Aiyuk’s presence would take it over the top. New York’s offense would be borderline unstoppable with a pair of top-10 wideouts augmented by veteran red zone threat Mike Williams and high-upside rookie Malachi “YAC King” Corley.
The Jets would likely need to offer up their top two selections in the 2025 draft to land Aiyuk, but the returns could be immense. It’s just the kind of move that a franchise suffering through the longest active streak of seasons without a playoff berth in major American sports needs to become relevant again,” wrote Kay.
Sacrificing premium assets in the 2025 NFL Draft is something some people would be against. Rodgers isn’t going to play forever, so the New York Jets need to at least have the pieces in place to survive once he leaves.
But, for as long as he is on the team, the only goal the franchise has is to win a Super Bowl. Adding a player of Aiyuk’s caliber would certainly help them take a step toward achieving that. Alas, there is one caveat to acquiring him.
In addition to the draft capital it will cost to acquire Aiyuk from the 49ers, he is also seeking a massive new contract. Can the New York Jets afford to pay him knowing that Garrett Wilson is eligible for an extension next offseason as well?
That could be an issue down the line to worry about. If Joe Douglas and the New York Jets have the chance to land Aiyuk, they should jump at it as they are in Super Bowl or bust mode.
