New York Jets Given Stern Warning About QB Justin Fields

The New York Jets may have answered their quarterback conundrum by signing Justin Fields in free agency, but a significant concern still remains.

Fields is still largely unproven, which is why he is now on his third team since entering the NFL as a first-round pick in 2021. As talented as he is, consistency has been a huge issue for the Ohio State product, which is why the Jets need to be careful with how they approach the remainder of the offseason.

That’s why Derek Praschak of The Jet Press feels that New York should still select a quarterback in the NFL Draft last month, even if it comes in the later rounds.

“But he isn’t C.J. Stroud. He isn’t Jayden Daniels. He isn’t Justin Herbert. He isn’t at the caliber yet where you can pencil him in on the depth chart indefinitely,” Praschak wrote of Fields. “He has a two-year contract for a reason. He has to prove it. … It could be at pick No. 7 overall, or more likely, at No. 42, No. 73, or a pick they trade into. It could be a higher-end prospect like Quinn Ewers or Jalen Milroe or someone else entirely. But if the Jets believe in a quarterback and the value is right, they shouldn’t hesitate. Fields shouldn’t be the reason they pass.”

Fields spent the 2024 campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, making six starts and throwing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and an interception while completing 65.8 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 289 yards and five scores.

Could the 25-year-old ultimately be the Jets’ signal-caller of the future? Perhaps, as he didn’t exactly have a great situation with the Chicago Bears over the first three seasons of his career, and the Steelers have had difficulty managing the quarterback position since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

But there is also no doubt that Fields is a big question mark, which is why New York should absolutely consider drafting a signal-caller next month.
