With the NFL offseason rolling along, who is the best-kept secret on the New York Jets currently? In the opinion of one NFL analyst, it is veteran cornerback D.J. Reed.
The New York Jets will be entering the 2024 season with expectations high once again. Hopefully, injuries won’t derail their season a few plays into this season, as the team can snap a long playoff drought.
Despite the team struggling for much of 2023, it was very apparent that they have a defense that is not only excellent as a group but filled with a lot of potential star power. On all three levels, the Jets have All-Pro caliber players. However, where they are really strong is in the secondary.
Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about who is the best kept secret for the Jets. They chose cornerback D.J. Reed. Here’s what they had to say
New York Jets: CB D.J. Reed
While Sauce Gardner gets most of the attention in the Jets’ secondary, Reed has been a quality corner on the other side of the defense. He finished the regular season a year ago with an 85.1 passer rating when targeted and earned a 79.5 coverage grade, per PFF.
This is truly an excellent choice, as even in New York, Reed has been overlooked because of Sauce Gardner. With one of the best cornerbacks in the league playing opposite of him, Reed doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves for being an excellent player as well.
As we often see, quarterbacks try to avoid throwing at Gardner. However, it isn’t much easier on the other side as D.J. Reed has proven to be able to guard No. 1 wide receivers on a consistent basis as well.
The New York Jets have a huge luxury at the cornerback position, as both Reed and Gardner can guard anybody one-on-one. While Reed’s name might not be known nationally, coaches and opposing players certainly know his abilities on the field.
As we head into 2024, the New York Jets arguably have the best cornerback duo in the league. Hopefully, D.J. Reed will start to get some more recognition.
