New York Jets Could Make Stunning Roster Cut

The curious situation surrounding New York Jets safety Malachi Moore has become one of the more puzzling storylines of the team’s preseason.

After starting 14 of 17 games as a rookie in 2025, the former Alabama standout found himself working with the third- and fourth-string units during the Jets’ preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That development quickly drew notice from observers who saw it as a concerning indicator for a player once viewed as a building-block piece on defense.

“Crazy to say but Malachi Moore feels like he’s closer to not making the 53 man roster than he is to even sniffing the field on defense right now,” The Jet Press posted on X.

Moore arrived in New York with considerable expectations. The Jets traded up in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft to select him, a move reflecting the organization’s strong belief in his potential.

Head coach Aaron Glenn had spoken highly of the safety during the pre-draft process, citing conversations with Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch and pointing to Moore’s leadership qualities as a college captain under Nick Saban.

In his first professional season, Moore appeared in every game and delivered solid production, finishing with 101 total tackles, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and three pass deflections.

Those numbers made his current standing all the more surprising. This offseason the Jets significantly upgraded the safety position by acquiring three-time first-team All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is expected to lock down one starting role.

The other safety spot has largely been held by veteran Andre Cisco during training camp. Cisco started the first eight games of last season before a pectoral injury sidelined him, and he returned on a modest one-year contract with limited guaranteed money. In theory the door remained open for Moore to seize the opportunity and reclaim a starting job.

Instead, early preseason evidence suggested the opposite trajectory. Analysts noted Moore lining up with reserve players while the backups surrendered a long touchdown drive to Tampa Bay.

Social media reactions reflected growing skepticism, with some questioning whether the second-year safety was closer to missing the 53-man roster than to contributing regularly on defense.

ESPN reporter Rich Cimini had recently urged Moore to step up and take the starting role from Cisco, emphasizing the young player’s draft pedigree and extensive college experience. That call to action now appears more urgent, shifting from a challenge to claim a starting job toward a need simply to secure any roster spot.

The situation leaves Moore at a critical juncture. With limited time remaining before final cuts, he must demonstrate clear improvement and consistency if he hopes to remain with the only NFL organization he has known.

For a player once projected as a long-term contributor, the sudden uncertainty marks a sharp and unexpected turn in his early career.
