New ESPN Prediction Isn’t Great News for Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns face one of the most anticipated quarterback battles in the NFL as training camp gets underway. Second-year signal-caller Shedeur Sanders is set to challenge established veteran Deshaun Watson for the starting role, creating a storyline that will dominate headlines in the coming weeks.

Many supporters of the franchise are watching closely to determine if Sanders can build on his rookie experience, which featured both promising moments and challenges. However, not all observers are convinced that the young quarterback will claim the top spot by the season opener.

As rookies begin reporting to camp this week and veterans prepare to join shortly afterward, various perspectives are emerging on the likely outcome of the position fight. Sanders has drawn favorable attention during the offseason for his strong leadership qualities, dedication to improvement, and efforts to connect with fellow players.

Despite the buzz around the former Colorado standout heading into his sophomore campaign, longtime ESPN Cleveland analyst Tony Grossi remains skeptical about Sanders overtaking Watson. In a recent segment on ESPN Cleveland, Grossi shared his thoughts when questioned about the possibility of the rookie-era player securing the starting job.

“I would be surprised. I don’t think at this stage Watson is going to come back to the pack,” Grossi said.

This viewpoint indicates that Grossi continues to regard Watson as the frontrunner, provided the veteran stays healthy. It is worth noting that Watson sat out the entire 2025 season and has not taken an NFL snap since 2024.

Grossi’s stance echoes other remarks he has offered recently, in which he maintained that the organization still sees greater potential in Watson at the start of camp. At the same time, he left room for the possibility that Sanders might deliver unexpected results through his performance.

Such analysis may disappoint portions of the Browns fan base, particularly those eager for Sanders to capitalize on the opening created by the veteran’s absence. The situation has the potential to stir debate, yet the second-year quarterback has worked to keep the atmosphere collaborative rather than divisive.

Instead of allowing the competition to create tension, Sanders has repeatedly stressed the importance of unity during the offseason period. He participated in joint training sessions in Miami with Watson and several standout receivers from the team, focusing on mutual growth.

“We’re both trying to be the best version of ourselves we could be,” Sanders said.

“We’re not going to let anything get in between that.”

He went on to describe how the two quarterbacks regularly share insights and benefit from each other’s experiences, describing those discussions as “what’s most effective.”

Sanders further pointed out the benefits of the offseason throwing drills, which helped strengthen bonds with teammates away from the main practice facilities ahead of the formal camp sessions.

Although Grossi leans toward Watson as the likely leader entering camp, the outcome remains uncertain. The daily practices in training camp, combined with opportunities in preseason contests, will provide the clearest evidence of which quarterback offers the team its strongest chance at success this year.

For Sanders, the weeks ahead represent a prime chance to demonstrate his readiness and potentially shift the opinions of doubters. By continuing to display growth and composure, he aims to convince the coaching staff and front office that he belongs behind center as the franchise’s primary option under center.

Ultimately, the Browns’ quarterback decision carries significant weight for the direction of the season. Whether the nod goes to the experienced Watson or the ascending Sanders, the competition itself highlights the organization’s push to find the right mix of talent and stability at the game’s most critical position.
