Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler reiterated his desire to be traded during a recent face-to-face meeting with team president Pat Riley, according to ESPN.

Butler, 35, informed Riley that he does not plan to sign a new contract in Miami and intends to use his $52 million player option for 2025-26 strictly as leverage in a potential trade.

Ongoing Suspension and Next Steps

Butler’s seven-game suspension for what the Heat labeled “detrimental conduct” concludes Thursday. At that point, Miami’s front office must decide whether to reintroduce him to the active roster or seek a deal.

The team is expected to convene this week to discuss possible paths forward, while owner Micky Arison also plans to meet with Butler, ESPN reported.

Since Butler’s suspension began, the Heat have pieced together a 3-2 record on a six-game road trip, including victories over the Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings. With Miami sitting at 20-18 and seventh in the Eastern Conference, teammates and coaches have emphasized unity amid the uncertainty surrounding Butler’s future.

“This is what we wanted, just to get back on the road, get away from all the chaos,” guard Tyler Herro said recently. “Rallying around each other, making it about the guys that are here now. We got enough.”

Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler Trade Talks in Flux

The Heat initially announced Butler’s suspension on January 3, citing his unwillingness to remain with the team after requesting a trade. While Miami has reportedly engaged multiple teams in discussions, no substantive progress has been made toward a deal. ESPN noted that Riley has shown little urgency in negotiations ahead of the NBA trade deadline on February 6.

According to previous reporting, Butler has identified the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets as possible landing spots. However, Riley declared just after Christmas that the Heat would not be trading the five-time All-NBA swingman. Since then, Butler has played in only two games—both low-impact appearances—before being sidelined by suspension.

Sources of Discontent

ESPN added that one factor contributing to Butler’s trade request was a suggestion from within the Heat organization that he did not give maximum effort during Miami’s New Year’s Day victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Butler has reportedly been at odds with the team over contract matters and his role in the offense. Though he is averaging 17.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists on a career-best 55.2% shooting, his 10.5 field goal attempts per game mark his lowest usage in over a decade.

What’s Next for Jimmy Butler?

Despite the drama, the Heat remains in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Head coach Erik Spoelstra and key contributors Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro have continued to stress a “next man up” mentality. Should Butler rejoin the roster, Miami hopes he can help sustain its postseason hopes—or provide enough trade value to reshape the team’s future.

Still, according to Chris Haynes, who spoke on the Dan Le Batard Show, the Heat appear “nowhere close” to completing a Butler deal. If no viable trade emerges, the Heat may elect to bring the forward back into the fold, at least temporarily, while monitoring potential offers up to and beyond the trade deadline.

All eyes now turn to the end of Butler’s suspension on Thursday, when the Heat will either reinstate their star or finally find him a new home. One thing is sure: Butler’s future in Miami remains as uncertain as ever.
