The Detroit Pistons and New Orleans Pelicans could pull off a trade centered on Brandon Ingram, with the Pistons looking to bolster their NBA playoff hopes and the Pelicans considering the future of their roster.

According to a trade idea presented by Bleacher Report, the potential deal would send Brandon Ingram to the Pistons, giving them a versatile scoring threat and bolstering their chances in the Eastern Conference playoff race. In exchange, the Pelicans would receive Isaiah Stewart, Tim Hardaway Jr., and a 2025 second-round pick.

Detroit Pistons’ Motivation for the Deal

With Jaden Ivey sidelined for the season due to a broken leg, Detroit is seeking a reliable scoring option to maintain its competitive edge. Ingram, averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in 18 games this season, fits that profile perfectly.

While recovering from an ankle injury, Ingram would step into the starting lineup upon return, providing the Pistons with another versatile offensive weapon. Additionally, Detroit would secure Ingram’s Bird rights heading into the summer, giving them an edge in retaining the impending NBA free agent.

New Orleans Pelicans’ Perspective

Ingram’s extension talks reportedly fizzled out in the offseason, with the forward seeking a deal in the $50 million annual range. This unresolved situation adds urgency for New Orleans to weigh its options, especially with the Pelicans facing a decision on Zion Williamson’s future.

Sitting at 8-32, the Pelicans may view trading Ingram as a step toward reshaping their roster. With Ingram potentially leaving in free agency after the 2024-25 season, obtaining Stewart, Hardaway, and a future second-round pick could be appealing as they evaluate long-term plans.

Stewart brings youth and frontcourt versatility, while Hardaway Jr. offers veteran leadership and shooting depth. However, the return package may not meet New Orleans’ desired threshold for “equivalent talent.”

New Orleans has considered trading Ingram but has yet to receive a compelling offer. The Pelicans could opt to hold on to Ingram for a potential sign-and-trade next summer if the right deal doesn’t materialize before the deadline.

NBA Trade Deadline Looms

The Pistons and Pelicans face critical decisions as the February 6 trade deadline approaches. For Detroit, acquiring Ingram could solidify their playoff push and potentially establish him as a franchise cornerstone. For New Orleans, whether to trade Ingram now or gamble on retaining value through other avenues in the offseason.

Both teams will continue exploring their options, with Ingram’s future as a key storyline in this year’s trade season.
