It has been quite some time since the San Antonio Spurs have experienced any type of success, but things may be changing heading into the 2024-25 NBA campaign.

The Spurs have a very impressive group of young talent led by big man Victor Wembanyama, and they signed wily point guard Chris Paul as well as veteran forward Harrison Barnes in free agency.

San Antonio does play in the rugged Western Conference and only won 22 games last year, but Bleacher Report’s Mo Dakhil thinks that the team could show vast improvement this coming season.

“In the end, the Spurs may not be a playoff or play-in team in 2025,” Dakhil wrote. “But they will win more games than the 22 they won last season.”

The Spurs’ young talent goes beyond Wembanyama, too.

Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan and rookie Stephon Castle are all impressive pieces, and even role players like Tre Jones and Julian Champagnie are nothing to scoff at.

Of course, it may take some time for San Antonio’s nucleus to actually develop, but there is no question that the Spurs boast one of the most impressive stables of young talent in basketball.

Obviously, plenty of other teams in the West can say the same, including clubs that are already contending such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies. The Houston Rockets will be interesting, too.

Still, it’s a process, and at the very least, the Spurs have made progress.

San Antonio has not made the playoffs since 2019 and has not won a postseason series since 2017. As Dakhil said, the San Antonio Spurs may not be poised for a playoff run this year, but it is not out of the realm of possibility for the team to contend for a postseason berth.
