The Minnesota Vikings have quietly built one of the more intriguing defenses in the NFC.
After a shaky first half against Green Bay in Week 1, Brian Flores’s unit has tightened dramatically, allowing just six points across the remainder of that game and all of Week 2 against Chicago.
That kind of complementary football can keep a team in the playoff picture even when the offense is still finding its footing.
The question hanging over the franchise is whether the quarterback room can do enough to let that defense win games. Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and is expected to start, while Carson Wentz provided a steady, low-mistake alternative in the first two weeks.
If Murray fails to settle in quickly or if turnovers become a problem, Minnesota could start looking outside the building before the November 10 trade deadline.
That is where San Francisco backup Mac Jones enters the conversation. Zachary Rotman of FanSided recently listed the Vikings among three possible landing spots for Jones if the 49ers decide to move him.
“Jones is on an expiring contract, and given that he’s the best backup in the league, he’ll almost certainly leave the Niners in the offseason, hoping to be a starter elsewhere,” Rotman wrote. “Additionally, look at the mounting list of quarterback injuries around the league. Is it out of the realm of possibility that the Niners can get something like a second-round pick or even better from a desperate suitor? If such an offer exists, it might be worthwhile accepting the downgrade at the backup spot and acquiring a premier asset.”
The logic is straightforward. Jones has proven he can run an offense without collapsing it, and several teams already dealing with quarterback instability might view him as a midseason upgrade.
For Minnesota, a veteran who can protect the football and operate Kevin O’Connell’s scheme would buy time if Murray’s return is uneven.
San Francisco, however, has reasons to hesitate. The 49ers look like legitimate Super Bowl contenders, and Brock Purdy’s durability is never guaranteed.
Trading away one of the league’s most capable backups would leave them thinner at a position that can decide a season in a single afternoon.
Rotman himself noted that the idea of moving Jones “doesn’t make much sense at first glance” precisely because of that insurance value.
Whether Minnesota ever makes a serious call will depend on how Murray performs in the coming weeks. For now, the Vikings have a defense that can travel and a quarterback situation that remains unsettled.
That combination is exactly why Jones’s name keeps surfacing in trade speculation.
