The Minnesota Vikings head into their final preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Friday with more questions than answers at quarterback.
J.J. McCarthy, the former first-round pick who showed flashes a year ago, now finds his roster spot far from guaranteed as the team prepares to cut down to 53 players by August 30.
NBC Sports insider Mike Florio recently raised the possibility that McCarthy could be off the roster when the deadline arrives. At this point, a McCarthy trade seems very plausible.
That suggestion has intensified scrutiny of a situation that already felt uneasy. McCarthy has been splitting second-team work with veteran Carson Wentz rather than locking down the backup role behind Kyler Murray, a development few expected when the offseason began.
On the August 26 edition of Purple Daily, Phil Mackey delivered a pointed reminder about the long-term risk of walking away too soon.
“Are you sure he’s a bust?” Mackey said. “Because a lot of people are convinced that J.J. McCarthy is a dud. He’s a bust. Are people not even slightly worried about the Vikings potentially bailing on him before the season? … That’s my only question: Are you not a little worried that this whole process is going to come back to bite the Vikings and look really bad in like two years?”
Mackey pointed to specific moments from last season that still linger. McCarthy’s fourth-quarter work against Chicago and the decisive throws that helped finish off Detroit remain evidence of what the young quarterback can do when the game opens up.
Even in games against weaker defenses, the Vikings put up 65 points in two outings with him under center. Those snapshots, Mackey argued, should give the organization pause before treating a 23-year-old as a finished product.
The concern is that Minnesota’s perennial focus on the immediate present could overshadow the slower work of development. If McCarthy eventually finds his footing, Mackey suggested it may well happen somewhere else, in an environment that allows the good things already seen last year to surface more consistently.
Judd Zulgad, appearing on the same show, described a deeper mismatch. The fit between McCarthy and the Vikings has felt like oil and water from early on, he said, with a sense of friction that practices only reinforced.
Whatever the exact mix of coaching, scheme, and personality, the sense is that the relationship is unlikely to improve with time. If McCarthy does become a productive NFL starter, Zulgad believes it will almost certainly be in another uniform.
The coming days will reveal whether the Vikings are prepared to live with that possibility.
For a franchise that has spent years searching for quarterback stability, the decision on McCarthy carries weight that extends well beyond this weekend’s game in Denver.
