Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has offered a blunt assessment of the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to hold a players-only meeting among their defensive players.

Appearing on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, the current NBC Sports analyst made clear he sees little value in such gatherings once word of them reaches the public.

“I think you’re dead,” Tomlin said. “Hey, if it did occur, I’d like to not hear about it. The fact that you hear about it is what makes it BS. You know what I mean? ‘We had a players-only meeting.’”

The comments arrived as the Cowboys sit at 2-3 following a 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Dallas surrendered 419 yards and nearly 40 minutes of possession to an offense led by undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels in just his second career start.

The defensive shortcomings prompted the franchise to add Mike Pettine as a defensive assistant working alongside coordinator Christian Parker, and the players themselves convened privately in hopes of resetting their approach.

Tomlin’s skepticism centers on the idea that internal meetings lose their purpose once they become public knowledge.

In his view, the very act of discussing the gathering outside the locker room signals deeper problems that a closed-door session is unlikely to fix.

The Cowboys currently rank last in the NFL in run defense at 168.4 yards allowed per game and 31st in total defense at 395.4 yards per game. They also sit 21st against the pass and 25th in scoring defense.

The secondary has shown occasional competence, yet the pass rush has managed only five sacks through five games.

Veterans such as Von Miller and Rashan Gary are expected to elevate their production if the unit is to improve.

Parker, still early in his tenure as coordinator, carries the primary responsibility for accelerating that progress before the season slips further.

Dallas faces the Green Bay Packers next, an opponent that recently generated more than 400 yards against the Chicago Bears. The Cowboys hope the possible returns of Cobie Durant, DeMarvion Overshown, and Joey Porter Jr. will help stabilize the defense, though the existing front must also execute more consistently.

Even in a potential win, measurable improvement will be required. Continued struggles could accelerate larger changes, as the organization has already shown a willingness to adjust its defensive staff midseason.

Tomlin’s four-word reaction captures a longstanding coaching perspective: players-only meetings may occasionally serve a purpose, but their value diminishes sharply once they leave the room.

For a Cowboys defense searching for answers, the real test will come on the field rather than in any private conversation.
