Taylor Lewan did not sugarcoat what he saw from Michigan’s young quarterback. After Bryce Underwood’s uneven start to the 2026 season, the former Wolverines star used a national television appearance to deliver a blunt assessment that many Michigan fans had already been thinking.

Underwood arrived in Ann Arbor as the top-rated high school prospect in the country and was expected to take a clear step forward as a sophomore.

Instead, his opening performance against Western Michigan left more questions than answers.

He completed barely more than half his passes and turned the ball over twice in a win that felt more messy than convincing. The result was a growing conversation about whether the former five-star recruit is ready for the spotlight that comes with starting at Michigan.

Lewan, speaking on ESPN’s Bussin’ & Pate On Campus ahead of Michigan’s home game against Oklahoma, made it clear he was not impressed. He said the Week 1 tape simply was not good enough.

“Clearly, what we saw in Week 1 was not good enough,” Lewan said. “It’s so easy to say that. The kid gets paid millions of dollars and he needs to play better. If he doesn’t, he will most likely lose his job. All of those things are absolutely true.”

Yet Lewan did not stop at criticism. He offered a pointed piece of advice about how Underwood should handle the noise.

The young quarterback needs to hear it, sit with it, and recognize that this is the reality of the position. He should run the ball whenever possible, protect it when he throws, and stop playing as if he is trying not to make a mistake.

Lewan’s most memorable line was that Underwood has to take the guardrails off and live or die by his own decisions. No one is coming to save him. That last point, delivered by a former NFL tackle who knows pressure, felt less like a sound bite and more like a challenge.

The Wolverines did go on to upset Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon, but Underwood labored once again, going 9-for-17 with 111 yards. He added 87 yards on the ground, but it’s clear that the sophomore must improve as a passer.

The financial context only sharpens the moment. Reports put Underwood’s annual compensation around three million dollars, a figure that makes average play look expensive. Michigan did not invest that kind of money for a quarterback who looks tentative.

Whether the message lands remains to be seen on the field. For now, a Michigan legend has put the conversation in the simplest possible terms: play better, or someone else will.
