The Miami Marlins made one of the winter’s simplest roster calls official on Friday, picking up the $21 million club option on right-hander Sandy Alcantara for the 2027 season.

The decision locks the former National League Cy Young Award winner into his final year under the five-year extension he signed in November 2021, after which he is set to reach free agency.

For a franchise that has operated with an almost empty payroll ledger in recent years, the choice was never in serious doubt.

Miami has no other players guaranteed money for 2027 beyond residual payments tied to the Giancarlo Stanton trade, and Alcantara remains the club’s most recognizable face and its longest-tenured rotation piece.

Reports in late September indicated the organization had no intention of trading him this offseason, a stance reinforced by owner Bruce Sherman’s long-standing affinity for the right-hander and by Alcantara’s own public statements that he would like to finish his career in a Marlins uniform.

The on-field case was equally clear. After missing all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery and posting a down year in 2025, Alcantara returned in 2026 as a genuine workhorse.

He led the majors with 214 innings across 36 appearances, finished 13-11 with a 3.87 ERA, and even collected three saves in late-season relief outings once the club was eliminated.

President of baseball operations Peter Bendix has repeatedly praised both the performance and the clubhouse example Alcantara sets, calling the leadership “second to none.”

Exercising the option rather than paying the $2 million buyout keeps that stability in place for one more season while the front office evaluates whether a longer commitment makes sense.

With young talent emerging elsewhere on the roster and the books otherwise clean, some within the industry already view Alcantara as a potential extension candidate this winter rather than a pure trade chip.

For now, though, the Marlins have simply ensured that their ace will take the ball again in 2027.

The club marked the moment on social media with a brief “Saddle up” message, a fitting shorthand for a decision that had been widely expected for weeks.

Alcantara’s 2027 salary will be the highest single commitment on Miami’s books, yet it also represents the final year of control before a pitcher who has spent his entire major-league career with the organization can test the open market.

How both sides approach that eventual free agency will be one of the more interesting subplots of the coming months.
