The New York Mets find themselves in a challenging position as the MLB trade deadline approaches, with their starting pitcher Clay Holmes emerging as a potential piece on the move.
Amid a disappointing season that has seen the team fall well out of contention, discussions about a long-term contract extension for the veteran right-hander appear to have gone nowhere, opening the door for trade possibilities.
Holmes, who is 33 years old, has been working his way back from a fractured right fibula suffered in mid-May. He is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse, where he made his first start in months on Thursday. In that outing against Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Holmes pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and two earned runs while recording two strikeouts on 51 pitches.
The rust was evident after a clean first inning, as he struggled with command in subsequent frames before being lifted. Mets interim manager Andy Green had hoped for roughly three innings from him, but the veteran will likely need at least one more rehab appearance before any potential return.
With Holmes entering the final year of his current deal and holding a $12 million player option for 2027, the timing of his recovery coincides with critical roster decisions for New York. However, SNY’s Chelsea Janes has indicated that an extension is not on the horizon.
“As of this exact moment, there is no extension. There’s no reason to believe one is coming,” Janes said on Honda SportsNite. “If (an extension) doesn’t happen, I think what you’re looking at is a trade scenario. There should be a lot of interested teams.”
This assessment aligns with the broader reality facing the Mets, who sit at 43-60 and trail the Atlanta Braves by 17.5 games in the NL East.
The club has been widely identified as one of the clearer sellers ahead of the August 3 deadline, according to multiple reports. ESPN’s Buster Olney noted that the Mets, along with the Giants and Rockies, stand out among teams actively looking to unload veterans as they pivot toward the future.
Holmes’ situation exemplifies the tough choices ahead. A proven performer when healthy, his availability and contract status could attract significant interest from contending clubs seeking rotation help.
At the same time, the Mets’ front office must weigh the value of moving him now against the slim chance of a competitive resurgence, especially with other veterans like Francisco Lindor also potentially drawing attention.
As the deadline nears, Holmes’ continued rehab progress will be closely monitored, but the lack of extension momentum suggests his time in a Mets uniform could be drawing to a close.
For a team rebuilding on the fly, dealing the right-hander might provide the kind of assets needed to bolster a young core that includes protected talents like Juan Soto, Carson Benge, and several top prospects.
