With the MLB trade deadline drawing to a close, the New York Mets have emerged as one of the top sellers on the market. But will they move catcher Luis Torrens?

Catching has emerged as one of the thinner positions on the market, so the Mets may be able to reap quite a haul in return for Torrense. Yet according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the New York has made it clear they have no intention of parting with the 30-year-old backstop.

Torrens has quietly established himself as a valuable piece for the Mets since arriving from the Yankees in a modest cash deal a couple of years ago.

While his bat has been modest this season, with an OPS hovering near .590, his work behind the plate continues to stand out. Strong framing, quick pop times, and the ability to control the running game have made him a favorite among evaluators who prioritize defense at the position.

Heyman has previously noted the Mets’ affection for the Venezuelan native, pointing out that the club values him highly enough that they locked him into a two-year extension earlier this year, securing him through 2028 at a reasonable rate.

That extension helps explain the team’s reluctance. Even as the Mets navigate a disappointing campaign and appear open to moving certain pieces, Torrens represents continuity and reliability at a position where quality options are scarce.

Contenders such as the White Sox, dealing with injury issues of their own at catcher, have been among those linked to potential interest. Other clubs seeking defensive stability have also checked in, given how few proven options are available without surrendering significant prospect capital.

Still, the Mets appear set on keeping Torrens as part of their longer-term picture. With Francisco Alvarez already under club control and Torrens providing a high-end defensive complement, the organization sees little reason to disrupt that arrangement unless an overwhelming offer materializes—an outcome that seems unlikely given the club’s stated stance.

Heyman’s latest reporting reinforces that the Mets view Torrens not merely as a backup but as a foundational piece they prefer to retain rather than cash in for short-term returns.

In a deadline environment where sellers often look to maximize value on any available asset, the Mets’ firm position on Torrens underscores how differently they evaluate the catcher.

Defense-first contributors who can handle a significant workload remain rare, and Torrens fits that description well enough that the club is prepared to hold the line even as other teams search.

For now, at least, one of the stronger defensive catchers available will remain in Queens rather than joining the scramble of deadline deals.
