The intense rivalry between New York’s two baseball teams has taken an interesting turn in recent offseasons. The Mets have developed a pattern of acquiring talent directly connected to the Yankees, leaving fans in the Bronx frustrated and those in Queens excited about potential new additions.
Supporters of the Mets are buzzing with anticipation over the possibility that outfielder Cody Bellinger might join their squad next. This speculation gained traction following a recent analysis that favors the team from Queens in the pursuit of the versatile slugger.
In his latest piece for ESPN, seasoned baseball writer David Schoenfield forecasted that the Mets would ultimately secure Bellinger’s services. Although the Yankees remain actively interested, Schoenfield believes they will fall short in the bidding process.
Schoenfield highlighted the strategic direction under Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns.
“(David) Stearns is clearly emphasizing defense — bringing in Marcus Semien to play second base and ditching Alonso,” Schoenfield wrote. “Bellinger fits in that regard, especially in left field, where he would be a plus defender, and he can handle center as well. The Dodgers could be in the mix here as well, but that outfield hole for the Mets is glaring. If they aren’t going to sign Tucker and if they’re not willing to give a long-term deal to a pitcher, Bellinger is the best fit for them at the top of the market.”
According to Schoenfield’s outlook, Bellinger could sign a substantial six-year pact worth $180 million. He noted that certain competitors, like the Cincinnati Reds, seem to have bowed out, leaving the Yankees as a primary contender alongside others.
This potential move would continue a trend for the Mets this winter. They have already added reliever Devin Williams and pitcher Luke Weaver through deals involving their crosstown rivals.
Looking back further, the Mets made headlines last offseason by signing superstar Juan Soto, who had previously played in the Bronx. That acquisition shifted the balance of power in the city and set high expectations for future bold moves.
Bellinger delivered one of his strongest performances in years during the 2025 season with the Yankees. He appeared in 152 games—the highest total for him since 2018—and posted impressive numbers, including 29 home runs and 98 RBIs.
His time at Yankee Stadium appeared particularly productive, raising questions about whether he would prefer to stay in a familiar environment. However, the Mets seem determined to challenge that notion with an aggressive offer.
