New York Mets first baseman Jared Young left Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies on a stretcher after a collision near first base at Citi Field.
The incident happened with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Phillies outfielder Justin Crawford hit a slow grounder down the first-base line. Both Young and pitcher Nolan McLean went after the ball.
Young initially appeared ready to field it, then moved back toward the bag as McLean charged in. The two players were off balance when McLean’s knee struck Young in the head.
Young dropped to the dirt and remained down for several minutes. Mets trainers, interim manager Andy Green and medical staff tended to him on the infield while Phillies players waited quietly in their dugout.
Crews eventually immobilized Young’s head and neck and placed him on a stretcher. He was loaded onto a cart and taken off the field through the outfield.
As the cart rolled away, Young raised his arm and gave the crowd a thumbs-up. Fans at Citi Field responded with an ovation.
The Mets said Young was taken to a hospital for further examination.
“Jared Young is being taken to hospital for further examination. He has feeling in his extremities. Additional updates will be provided when possible,” the team announced during the game.
Mark Vientos replaced Young at first base. McLean stayed in the game after the collision.
Young, 31, has been a regular at first base for New York this season. He entered Thursday hitting .266 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in 103 games, along with a .330 on-base percentage and .429 slugging percentage.
Those numbers produced a .759 OPS and 1.8 bWAR. He has also seen time in left field and right field.
This year marked Young’s first extended stretch of regular playing time in the majors. He appeared in 22 games for the Mets in 2025.
Young signed a one-year major league contract with New York in December 2024 after earlier stops with the Chicago Cubs and a brief time in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
The Cubs selected him in the 15th round of the 2017 draft out of Old Dominion. He debuted in the majors with Chicago in 2022, appearing in six games that year and 16 more in 2023.
He spent part of 2024 in the KBO and at Triple-A before joining the Mets. His career line entering Thursday stood at .251/.316/.438 with 15 home runs and 53 RBI in 146 big-league games.
Young already missed time this season with a left-knee meniscus tear. He underwent surgery in mid-April after hitting well in the early going and returned in late May.
The Mets were still playing Thursday night after the delay. No further official update on Young’s condition was immediately available beyond the hospital statement.
