New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil has been outstanding for the team in 2024. The entire pitching staff has stepped up without their ace, Gerrit Cole, who has been sidelined since experiencing discomfort in Spring Training.
Despite not having the reigning Cy Young award winner in the American League atop their rotation, the New York Yankees still have the lowest ERA in baseball. Luis Gil has been a big reason for that.
In his last start against the Chicago White Sox, he made franchise history. Gil struck out 14 White Sox, which broke the record held by Orlando Hernandez for most punchouts by a rookie in a single game.
In nine starts this season, the rookie has gone 5-1. He has an ERA of 2.39 and FIP of 3.13, which is still a very strong number. Gil has struck out 63 batters compared to 27 walks, which is his only issue currently; he has walked more guys than he has allowed on via hits, as he has given up only 26 base hits on the season.
What Luis Gil has produced to this point is very impressive. Alas, his time as a starter could be coming to an end soon. In the opinion of Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Gil is who could be in danger of losing his spot in the rotation when Cole is healthy. But, it isn’t because of performance.
“Manager Aaron Boone will have a difficult decision to make regarding who moves to the bullpen when Cole returns, which is still several weeks away. While Gil doesn’t have a traditional innings limit, his workload will be monitored, which means he’s the likeliest candidate to lose his spot in the rotation.”
Gil did not pitch in the 2023 season for the New York Yankees. As Kirschner notes, there isn’t a traditional innings limit on him as the case is with rookies. But, after missing an entire season, the team will be keeping tabs on him throughout the season.
The New York Yankees are expecting to make a deep run into the postseason. To ensure that Luis Gil can be part of the mix that late in the season, limiting some innings during the summer by removing him from the rotation makes sense.
