The Los Angeles Lakers kicked off their season with a 119-109 loss to their divisional foes, the Golden State Warriors, on Tuesday night, showing early struggles in their campaign.
In their opening game, the Lakers appeared far from championship caliber, primarily due to the absence of their star forward, LeBron James, who was sidelined with sciatica on his right side and will miss several weeks. The 40-year-old icon was present on the Lakers’ bench, seated at the end, but his lack of visible enthusiasm sparked criticism across social media.
Post-game discussions highlighted this, though the team’s lackluster performance offered little to celebrate.
Amid the perception of James not being enthusiastic on the bench, Lakers insider Jovan Buha shared insights on the atmosphere surrounding James’ situation with the team, noting a less-than-ideal mood.
“Yeah, I mean I don’t wanna play armchair psychologist here, so I’m — I wanna refrain from too much speculation,” Buha said.
“But the vibes with that situation have not been the best, I’ll say. So, again, I don’t really wanna go too much down that road, but yeah, I mean, I thought there were times just looking at the huddle or looking at the bench that he wasn’t as engaged as he typically is when he’s out. You just never know what some — someone’s having a bad day or something’s going — whatever. You don’t wanna project onto people what you think they are feeling or acting like. But just in the observations I made of the body language, was not great, and I do think it was a bit different than what it has been in the past in this same situation of him being out.”
Reports surfaced that James, now in his 23rd NBA season, would use his recovery time to assess the Lakers’ roster. This seems to align with his current approach. James’ pursuit of a fifth championship remains evident, but the Lakers’ early showing suggests they are not yet poised to deliver it.
After an offseason full of rumors about James’ relationship with the Lakers coming to an end, it will be interesting to follow this storyline as the season moves forward.
