Always on the lookout for ways to improve their roster, the Los Angeles Dodgers are taking a swing on a former top prospect. On Wednesday, it was announced they completed a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays for utilityman Cavan Biggio.

Cavan Biggio was designated for assignment last week by Toronto after a brutal start to the season. Through 131 plate appearances, he recorded a slash line of .200/.323/.291 with only two home runs.

His struggles resulted in him being removed from the 40-man roster. The Los Angeles Dodgers opted to make a move for him, sending right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher back to the Blue Jays to complete the deal.

Fisher has split this season between Double and Triple-A. A fourth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, he has pitched 19 innings this season, registering a 5.68 ERA. He has struggled at times with control, striking out 30 but walking 15.

It will be interesting to see if the Los Angeles Dodgers can coax some of the production out of Cavan Biggio that he showed earlier in his career. In 2019, he was called up as part of a trio of sons of former major leaguers along with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.

Expectations were that Biggio would form part of the core for a Blue Jays team on the rise. He hit 16 home runs in 100 games as a rookie and was excellent in the COVID-19-shortened season with a .375 on-base percentage.

Alas, injuries have derailed him since. This season, he was losing playing time to journeyman utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Davis Schneider. Spencer Horowitz was brought up to try and jump-start an underwhelming offense, which led to Cavan Biggio being designated for assignment.

He could carve out a role immediately with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are getting limited production from complementary players such as Chris Taylor, Gavin Lux and Kike Hernandez are struggling and Max Muncy is on the injured list. While second base was his primary position, Biggio now has experience playing first base, third base and right field.
