The Las Vegas Raiders added another body to the backfield Wednesday, signing running back Owen Wright to the practice squad, the team announced.
The move is less a statement about immediate playing time than a quiet bid for insurance behind Ashton Jeanty and Mike Washington Jr., with Dylan Laube the only other running back currently on the active roster.
Wright, 27, has spent the better part of four years proving that persistence can keep an undrafted player in the league even when the stat sheet stays thin.
Baltimore signed him to a three-year deal after the 2023 draft out of Monmouth, where he had transferred from William & Mary and earned first-team All-CAA honors as a fullback and short-yardage runner.
The Ravens waived him after the preseason, then cycled him on and off the practice squad before a futures deal. When Baltimore declined a qualifying offer last offseason, he became a free agent and landed in Tampa Bay in July.
The Buccaneers cut him, Houston signed him in August, and he was among the Texans’ final cuts. In 2025 he appeared in three games for Tampa, carrying three times for six yards and returning three kickoffs for 73 yards.
That résumé is modest by design. Wright is listed at 5-foot-9 and 217 pounds, a compact runner whose college value came as much from special teams and goal-line work as from volume carries.
He is not likely to unseat Jeanty if the rookie’s ankle holds.
What he offers Las Vegas is familiarity with NFL meeting rooms and a chance to scout the offense from the practice squad while the team evaluates whether it needs a fourth back on game days.
The Raiders had already seen him up close in joint work with Houston this summer, so the signing was not a blind flyer.
Practice-squad running backs exist for the weeks when a starter is dinged or a special-teams role opens.
Wright’s path from Georgetown Prep to William & Mary to Monmouth to four NFL cities is the familiar grind of players who stay ready without ever becoming household names.
If Jeanty stays healthy and Laube handles the change-of-pace snaps, Wright may never dress on Sunday. If the depth chart thins again, the Raiders now have a veteran who knows how to report, practice, and wait. That is the entire point of the move.
Las Vegas will host the Kansas City Chiefs in a matchup of two 3-0 teams on Sunday.
