Lane Kiffin’s first return to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium ended in a 32-24 loss for his new LSU team, but it was a postgame remark about the crowd that quickly drew sharp criticism across social media.
Kiffin, speaking after No. 8 Ole Miss beat No. 7 LSU on Saturday night, addressed the electric atmosphere that greeted his Tigers.
“I guess I had to leave to get them to do that. You’re welcome,” he said.
The comment, shared widely by On3, landed amid an already charged reunion. Kiffin coached the Rebels for six seasons, compiling a 55-19 record and helping turn the program into a consistent contender before departing for LSU last December, just before Ole Miss’s College Football Playoff run.
Ole Miss fans made their feelings known well before kickoff. They packed ESPN’s College GameDay set with hostile chants aimed at their former coach. A school-record crowd of 70,033 then filled the stadium, creating the kind of noise that made life difficult for LSU throughout the night.
Trinidad Chambliss, the quarterback Kiffin had recruited from Division II and developed at Ole Miss, led the Rebels. He passed for 363 yards and two touchdowns and added a 14-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter that proved decisive.
Ole Miss built a 24-7 halftime lead. LSU rallied to tie the game at 24-24 with 11:21 remaining, but Chambliss answered with a 75-yard drive. Jaylon Braxton’s end-zone interception sealed the win.
On X, the On3 post featuring Kiffin’s remark generated hundreds of replies. Many users focused on what they saw as the coach’s tendency to center himself in the story.

The backlash reflected lingering resentment over the timing of Kiffin’s departure. He left after the regular season rather than staying through the playoffs, a move that still stings in Oxford.
Kiffin has said he wanted a new challenge and that both his Ole Miss years and the LSU opportunity could be true at the same time. Critics on Saturday night saw the atmosphere comment as another example of him claiming credit for something he no longer owned.
The Tigers fell to 2-1 and 0-1 in the Southeastern Conference. Ole Miss improved to 3-0 and 1-0, keeping early College Football Playoff positioning intact.
