There has been extensive online discourse surrounding the wage gap within the WNBA, particularly in light of discussions about rookie salaries triggered by Caitlin Clark’s impending five-figure earnings upon joining the league. Recently, President Joe Biden shared his perspective on this issue.

In remarks made on X this week, Biden commended women for their groundbreaking achievements in sports but expressed concern that they are not receiving equitable compensation.

He called for decisive steps to rectify this disparity and ensure that women receive fair remuneration for their contributions.

“Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share. It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.”

A significant point of contention in this debate is the vast difference in earnings between WNBA players and their counterparts in the NBA, with some noting that WNBA athletes earn only a fraction of what NBA players do.

However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that this discrepancy largely stems from the considerable gap in viewership and consequently lower revenues in the WNBA.

It’s worth mentioning that many WNBA players augment their income by competing overseas, a reality that gained attention following Brittney Griner’s arrest in Russia in 2022.

The current pay structure in the WNBA is governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement established in 2020, which is effective until 2027—coinciding with the period when Caitlin Clark’s rookie contract with the Fever will be nearing its conclusion.

Looking ahead, there’s optimism that as the WNBA continues to evolve and expand its reach, the next iteration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement might elevate the minimum salary for players to surpass the six-figure mark, addressing long-standing concerns about financial parity within the league.

Caitlin Clark, and many other women in the WNBA, deserve much better contracts than they are currently receiving. At least, it has reached the top level of notice with Joe Biden speaking out.
