Jimmy Butler is set to return to the court for the Miami Heat after completing a seven-game suspension, but the situation surrounding the forward remains tense as the NBA trade deadline looms.

Butler, who is not listed on the injury report for Friday’s game against the Denver Nuggets, has been at the center of controversy following his trade demand and the friction within the organization.

Sources told ESPN that there is palpable unease about Butler’s return, with some team members reportedly expressing doubt about how he will fit back into the locker room.

One anonymous source bluntly stated, “We don’t want him back,” while another said, “I don’t know how he can come back to this locker room.”

Butler’s frustration with his role on the team has been evident. According to reports, the 34-year-old forward has grown tired of the increased offensive responsibilities being placed on teammates Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, feeling that his role has diminished. After his last game on Jan. 2,

Butler openly questioned his future with the team, saying he wanted to “get my joy back for playing basketball” and expressed doubt that would happen in Miami.

“I’m fine with letting them do their thing, but if I’m going to be the second or third option, I’d rather do that in Phoenix next to Kevin Durant and Devin Booker,” a source close to Butler revealed.

Despite the ongoing tension, the Phoenix Suns are reportedly interested in trading for Butler. However, the trade would require significant moves, including dealing Bradley Beal, whose no-trade clause and massive contract complicate matters.

The Suns could theoretically offer their 2031 first-round pick in a trade, but they would need a third team to take on Beal’s hefty contract, and Beal would need to approve the trade. The odds of such a deal seem slim, leaving Miami in a difficult position.

Butler’s salary, which stands at $48.8 million this season with a player option for $52.4 million next season, makes him difficult to move, especially under the new collective bargaining agreement that places restrictions on big trades.

However, the Player Participation Policy (PPP) does allow the league to make exceptions for “rare and unusual circumstances.” Should Butler’s situation with the Heat reach an impasse, both sides may be able to find a solution outside the traditional trade structure.

As Jimmy Butler prepares for his return, the Miami Heat face an uncertain future with their star player, who has become a lightning rod for both internal and external drama. Miami’s management will have to navigate this complex situation carefully, balancing Butler’s demands with the realities of roster construction and team chemistry.
