The New York Jets received welcome news on Tuesday regarding one of their key free-agent additions from the offseason. Pass rusher Joseph Ossai has been cleared to return to the active roster after the team removed him from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Ossai had been placed on the PUP list in late July when veterans reported for training camp. At the time, the Jets offered no specific details about the issue that prevented him from passing his physical.

The development left some uncertainty around a player the franchise had invested in heavily this spring. The 26-year-old signed a three-year contract worth $34.5 million, with more than $22 million guaranteed, after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

During his time in Cincinnati, Ossai appeared in 61 games and made 12 starts. He recorded 14.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, and 44 quarterback hits, along with four forced fumbles and two recoveries.

Those numbers reflect a versatile edge defender capable of contributing against both the run and the pass. The Jets view him as a rotational piece who can help bolster a defensive line that struggled last season, when the team ranked near the bottom of the league in sacks and failed to record a single interception.

According to reporting from the New York Post, Ossai will not practice this week but is expected to begin working his way back into football shape.

There is optimism he could return to the practice field as early as next week. With more than a month remaining before the regular season, the Jets have time to integrate him gradually into the defensive scheme under head coach Aaron Glenn.

The timing of the update comes as the Jets continue their preparations through joint practices and the preseason schedule. Improving the pass rush remains a clear priority after last year’s defensive shortcomings.

Adding a healthy Ossai to the mix gives the coaching staff another option in the rotation and increases the chances of generating pressure that can lead to turnovers.

Ossai’s return does not solve every issue on the defensive front, but it removes one lingering question mark from the early stages of camp.

For a team looking to build consistency and physicality on that side of the ball, having their recent high-profile signing available represents a positive step as the focus shifts toward the regular season.
