Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to come off the injured list during the Yankees’ upcoming homestand, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday before the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Boone said Chisholm is “doing well.” Friday marked the second baseman’s fourth straight day of hitting, and he has also been throwing.
Chisholm has been sidelined with a sprained right thumb. He was hurt sliding into second base in the eighth inning of a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 8, when he was tagged out trying to stretch a single into a double.
The Yankees placed him on the 10-day injured list the following day, and Boone said then that Chisholm would have no baseball activities for seven to 10 days. New York recalled Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot. Jose Caballero has also taken time at second base.
The timeline lines up with the most important week of New York’s season.
The Yankees return to Yankee Stadium on Tuesday for a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. They close the regular season with three games against the Baltimore Orioles.
New York entered Friday at 88-64, second in the American League East and five games behind Tampa Bay. The Yankees took two of three from the Minnesota Twins at Target Field earlier this week, but dropped Thursday’s finale.
Before the injury, Chisholm was batting .232 with 107 hits, 19 home runs, 55 RBIs and 68 runs in 134 games. His 40 stolen bases match the career high he set in 2024.
He was also heating up. Chisholm had reached base in 13 of his last 28 plate appearances before going down.
The 2026 season has not matched his 2025 campaign. Last year, Chisholm hit .242 with a career-high 31 home runs, 31 stolen bases and 80 RBIs in 130 games. He earned his second All-Star selection and won the Silver Slugger Award at second base.
New York acquired Chisholm from the Miami Marlins at the 2024 trade deadline, and he helped the Yankees reach the World Series that fall. He signed a one-year, $10.2 million contract in January and is set to hit free agency this winter. He turns 29 on Feb. 1.
Boone did not give a specific activation date. The Yankees also have given no indication whether Chisholm will need a rehab assignment, though the minor-league regular season has limited games left.
Should the thumb hold up through live at-bats this weekend, Chisholm could be back at second base for the start of the Rays series with the division still within reach.
Gerrit Cole (8-9, 3.67 ERA) starts Friday’s opener for New York against Arizona left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (15-6, 2.62 ERA).
