Jalen Coker will play Sunday when the Carolina Panthers visit the Atlanta Falcons, after logging a full practice Friday and coming off the injury report.
Coker rolled his left ankle in the first quarter of the opener against the Chicago Bears. He stayed in the game and put up the best performance of his career.
He wore a walking boot Monday, which he called precautionary. He was limited Wednesday and Thursday before practicing in full Friday.
Coach Dave Canales laid out the Panthers’ plan early in the week.
“The hope is to ramp that up a little bit more tomorrow and then cut them loose Friday,” Canales said. “So I expect him to play on Sunday.”
Coker caught eight of nine targets for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the 59-37 loss to Chicago. The scores came on a 51-yard catch in the second quarter and an 8-yard catch in the fourth.
The 138 yards were a career high, and it was his first multi-touchdown game.
It followed his playoff game in January. In Carolina’s wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Coker caught nine passes on 12 targets for 134 yards and a touchdown.
He is the third player in Panthers history with at least 130 receiving yards in consecutive games, according to the team. The others are Steve Smith and Patrick Jeffers.
Coker was more focused on the result.
“Personally it’s great,” Coker said after the loss, “but I want to win.”
Quarterback Bryce Young completed 23 of 37 passes for 361 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in the opener. He also ran for a score.
Coker led the Panthers in catches, targets and yards. Tetairoa McMillan added five catches for 75 yards.
Coker played at Holy Cross and is in his third NFL season.
Atlanta is starting Cooper Rush at quarterback again, with Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa both out Sunday.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Should Coker’s ankle hold up, Carolina’s next game is at Cleveland on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
