Indiana Fever GM Reveals Future Plans for Sophie Cunningham

The Indiana Fever wrapped another season without a long playoff run, again watching a first-round series get away from them against a team they already knew well.

Las Vegas, the defending champions, closed Indiana out in three games. Exit interviews started almost right away, the usual mix of credit, frustration and questions about who stays and who goes.

Sophie Cunningham has been in that mix for two seasons. She came over from Phoenix, settled in as a shooter and a voice in the room, and spent much of 2026 getting as much notice for things said away from the floor as for anything she did on it.

Fever general manager Amber Cox said Saturday that those off-court comments will have no bearing on whether the team tries to re-sign her.

Indiana expects to talk with Cunningham about staying, Cox said, even though she is headed into unrestricted free agency after playing this season on a one-year deal.

Cox was asked in the team’s exit session whether the outside noise should change how the front office looks at her. She said it should not.

She then laid out what she sees in the locker room.

“(Sophie) is a really solid leader in the locker room … she brings levity, but also brings a lot of experience,” Cox said. “She’s serious and is an important voice in our locker room when we need it, when we really need to lock in. She’s an unrestricted free agent, so we look forward to having those conversations. She had a really productive year, and we’ll see just where things take us.”

The remarks came hours after the Aces ended Indiana’s year. Cox framed the next step as a conversation, not a done deal.

Cunningham has been a favorite in Indianapolis for her shooting and for the effort plays that show up when a possession gets messy. Fans have treated her as more than a spare part since the trade.

Away from the court, the attention has been sharper. Comments she made about young girls in sports, and about competing against biological men, set off one of the louder arguments of the season. She has said she was being honest, not picking a fight.

Cox set that debate to the side when she talked about the roster. She pointed to two years of production as a shooter and to Cunningham’s role when the group needs to settle down and lock in.

Nothing she said Saturday ties Cunningham to a return. Free agency is still early, and the Fever have other calls to make before any deal gets done.

Kelsey Mitchell is also moving toward the open market after carrying the offense. How Indiana spends, and whom it keeps, will shape the group around its core.

Cunningham’s side and the front office still have to sit down. Cox said the club is ready for that talk and is willing to see where it goes.

The plainest line from the day was about process. The comments that followed Cunningham all year, Cox said, will not decide whether Indiana makes the call.
