Steelers Again Connected To Russell Wilson This Offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be an interesting team to keep an eye on during the NFL offseason. After a season full of issues with quarterback Kenny Pickett, the Steelers turned to Mason Rudolph as their starter. He found some success, but Rudolph is not the guy that Mike Tomlin and company will want to start in 2024.

That has led some to think that they could look for a new quarterback in the offseason. Russell Wilson is a name that has come up multiple times.

NFL Network analyst and former NFL quarterback Derek Carr has connected the Steelers once again to Wilson. He believes that Pittsburgh is the top potential landing spot for the veteran quarterback.

“The Steelers have become a vertical passing team since Mike Sullivan took over as offensive play-caller. It’s a system in which Rudolph has thrived; consider the deep shot he lofted to George Pickens on a 66-yard score in Week 16. This system would fit Wilson like a glove. Not only can he push the ball vertically, but he can also be the general for a team that is run-centric and has a good defense. It’d be Seattle all over again!”

Wilson, who was acquired by the Denver Broncos in 2022, completed 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his second season as the team’s starter. He was temporarily benched for the final two weeks of the 2023 season, with conflicting reports about the reasons, with the Broncos citing football-based decisions and Wilson’s side mentioning contractual issues.

General manager George Paton has stated that “the door is open” for Wilson to return, but there are reports that the 35-year-old quarterback expects to be released in March before injury provisions in his contract become fully guaranteed.

If released, Russell Wilson would have the freedom to sign with any team, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are scheduled to face the Broncos next season. This situation leaves the Broncos with a significant dead money charge of $85 million.
