Eagles May Be Headed For Divorce With Longtime Fan Favorite Star

Fletcher Cox has been a fixture along the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defensive front for the last decade, but could his time in the City of Brotherly Love be coming to an end?

Cox is set to be a free agent this coming offseason, and with the Eagles having impressive youngsters like Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis in the trenches, Philadelphia could very well view Cox as expendable.

Former NFL executive Jeff Diamond wrote a piece for The 33rd Team outlining 12 players he feels could be on the move in the spring, and Cox made the list.

While Diamond acknowledges that Philly general manager Howie Roseman would surely prefer to keep Cox in the fold, he qualifies it by saying that he probably won’t want to pay Cox anything close to the salary he is currently earning (Cox is making $10 million this season).

As a result, Diamond states that Cox could end up walking via free agency.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was selected by the Eagles with the 12th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He made six straight trips to the Pro Bowl between 2015 and 2020, earning a First-Team All-Pro selection in 2018 after racking up 46 tackles, 10.5 sacks, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown.

While Cox still remains a very serviceable player, there is no doubt that his production has waned over the past several years.

In the 12 games he has played this season, the veteran has logged 24 tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Philadelphia is 10-3 and has lost two games in a row, falling into second place in the NFC East due to currently losing the tiebreaker to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Eagles will aim to get back on track when they battle the Seattle Seahawks next Monday.
