NFL Playoffs: 3 Key Takeaways from Buccaneers’ win against Eagles

In the final game of the NFL Wild Card Weekend, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to send the Philadelphia Eagles home. Here are three takeaways from the game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to pull off a big and convincing win against the Philadelphia Eagles to surprisingly advance in the NFL Playoffs. This was one of the most predictable, yet shocking wins of the weekend. If this was six weeks ago, the Eagles playing a first-round game on the road would have been shocking, let alone losing to the Buccaneers. However, recent play indicated that the Eagles were in trouble.

While the Eagles will have an offseason full of questions, the Buccaneers will be looking to keep this momentum going. Even without Tom Brady, the Buccaneers have been able to find success, which is impressive for the franchise.

As we move on to the next weekend of the NFL Playoffs, here are three key takeaways from the game.

The Bucs’ run defense stands tall

Coming into the game, it appeared like the Eagles were going to want to go back to the basics with a struggling defense and establish themselves on the ground. While the Eagles are considered one of the best-rushing teams in the league, the Buccaneers were able to stuff them.

In the win, the Bucs held the Eagles to just 42 rushing yards as a team, which is a shocking number to see. With the Bucs’ ability to play with a lead, it took away the Eagles’ ability to run the football.

As the Bucs prepare for the Lions next week, stopping their rushing attack and making the Lions’ offense one-dimensional will be helpful in the game.

Eagles have a tough offseason ahead

While the win for the Bucs was the main story, the Eagles have a lot of questions ahead of them. The horrible end to the season will likely result in change, and it seems like some of their veteran core like Jason Kelce have played their last game for the Eagles.

In addition to the roster aging, the biggest storyline has been the future of Nick Sirianni as the head coach. The struggles down the stretch have led many to speculate that the Eagles could move on from Sirianni.

Time will tell what happens to the Eagles in the offseason, but it appears they have a lot of work to do this offseason, as their defense fell apart.

Baker earning a new contract

Easily the biggest takeaway from the game was the play of Baker Mayfield. It was just a few years ago with the Cleveland Browns that it looked like Mayfield’s career as a starter in the NFL was done. However, with the Rams last year, Mayfield seemed to get his confidence and swagger back, and that translated into a great season with the Bucs.

Against the Eagles, Baker had one of his best games of the season, as he totaled 337 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. The performance by Baker carried the Bucs to a win, as it was one of his best games of the season.

With the win, Baker, who is an impending free agent certainly has earned himself a new contract with either the Bucs or elsewhere.
