In a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on a Thursday afternoon, Saban offered an intriguing explanation for Alabama’s struggles against Michigan: the Wolverines huddled.
This was a departure from Alabama’s previous opponents, as Michigan became the first team to huddle against them this season. Consequently, Alabama inadvertently adopted a slower pace of play, allowing the Wolverines to adapt and take advantage of the situation.
Nick Saban admitted, “We didn’t go fast enough.”
The statistical disparity between the two teams highlighted the impact of this change in pace. Michigan outgained Alabama 351 yards to 288, averaging 5.9 yards per play compared to Alabama’s 4.4.
Now, as the focus shifts to the upcoming national championship, how Washington – a high-octane team that typically averages just 66.1 plays per game – adjusts to the Michigan Wolverines’ deliberate pace will be a crucial factor in determining the ultimate winner.
