Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is now finds himself in a tenuous situation in Texas after laying another egg in a playoff game.
As a result, people are questioning whether or not Prescott is actually worth a contract extension. The 30-year-old is under contract through next year, and after that, he is slated to hit free agency.
So, could the Cowboys ultimately end up trading Prescott?
K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire mulls the possibility and ponders a scenario where Dallas could send Prescott to the Chicago Bears for Justin Fields.
The Bears own the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft (via the Carolina Panthers) and are widely expected to take a quarterback (most likely USC’s Caleb Williams). However, if they are able to trade Fields for an established signal-caller like Prescott, they could use the top selection to draft another playmaker on offense (or maybe trade the pick to collect some more assets).
Fields has one more year remaining on his current deal and showed flashes of brilliance this past season. In a league where dual threat quarterbacks reign king, Fields certainly has the chops and the talent to become a feared opponent.
Drummond suggests that Chicago could always send the No. 9 overall pick (which is their own) to the Cowboys as part of the package, which would give Dallas two first-round picks at its disposal.
Of course, the chances of this actually happening are slim to none.
It seems hard to envision the Cowboys moving on from Prescott this spring. He led the league with 36 touchdown passes this past season, and while he is just 2-5 in the playoffs, he has established himself as a steady presence under center for Dallas. It’s hard to find that in the NFL, and no one knows if Fields actually has it in him to become as consistent as Prescott.
One thing is for sure: it should certainly be an interesting offseason for Dak Prescott.
