NFL Legend Says Cowboys Hiring Bill Belichick Would Be Disastrous

After getting upset by the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs on Sunday, speculation is swirling that the Dallas Cowboys could bring in Bill Belichick as head coach for next season.

However, NFL legend and current ESPN analyst Shannon Sharpe says that Belichick and the Cowboys would not be the perfect match that some think.

When discussing the possibility on Monday, Sharpe essentially said that Belichick and Dallas owner Jerry Jones would be like oil and water.

“Hell no. Do you not understand that Bill Belichick wants authority?” Sharpe said on ESPN First Take. “Can you imagine Jerry Jones trying to hold a press conference and tell what’s going on with the team? And you think coach Belichick is going to sit by—idly by—and let Jerry do that? Absolutely not, it would the worst—it’s a match made in hell. You couldn’t pick a worse match than Jerry Jones and Bill Belichick.”

It seems worth mentioning that Belichick has “built a very solid relationship” with Jones, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. Of course, just because Belichick has forged a good relationship with Jones does not necessarily mean they would work well together.

Belichick and the New England Patriots parted ways after the Patriots went just 4-13 this season. It marked the end of Belichick’s illustrious 24-year run in Foxborough, where he led New England to six Super Bowl championships, nine Super Bowl appearances and 17 AFC East division titles.

The Cowboys currently do not have an opening at head coach, but the general consensus is that Jones will ultimately fire Mike McCarthy from his post after yet another disappointing playoff exit.

Should Jones let McCarthy go, you can bet that the Belichick-to-Dallas speculation will grow even stronger, regardless of whether or not Bill Belichick and Jones would be a good fit together.
