The New England Patriots have a new head coach in Jerod Mayo, but they have still not sorted out their quarterback situation.

Of course, the Patriots can always take a signal-caller in this year’s NFL Draft, but ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks that the team may draft a quarterback and bring in a veteran.

And who is a big veteran name that will probably be available this offseason? Russell Wilson.

The Denver Broncos will almost certainly be cutting Wilson, and Fowler thinks the Pats will be “potential sleepers” to sign the nine-time Pro Bowler if and when that happens.

Wilson was benched by the Broncos with two games remaining in the regular season after he refused to defer his $37 million injury guarantee. It becomes fully guaranteed on March 17, meaning Denver will likely release him before that date.

The 35-year-old actually played some good football this year, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 98.

Clearly, Wilson has something left in the tank, so the idea of New England possibly bringing him into the fold absolutely makes sense.

Mac Jones has not worked out under center and may end up getting dealt this offseason, and Bailey Zappe has not exactly impressed, either.

Whether it’s Wilson or someone else, it would be very surprising if there is not a new quarterback taking snaps for the Patriots next season.

As Fowler suggests, New England could draft a quarterback and sign Wilson, allowing Wilson to take the reins in a bridge year (or two) while the rookie signal-caller learns under Wilson’s tutelage.

The Pats went just 4-13 this year, resulting in the team parting ways with Bill Belichick after 24 seasons.

Perhaps Russell Wilson could guide them to a better season in 2024.
