Minnesota Vikings, Kirk Cousins Free Agency May Get Ugly

Kirk Cousins has been a member of the Minnesota Vikings since 2018 and has been nothing but an incredibly productive quarterback and a class act since arriving.

However, Cousins is slated to hit free agency this March, which could create a rather ugly standoff between the two sides.

Cousins will be 36 years old at the start of next season and tore his Achilles midway through this year, so he almost surely isn’t getting a long-term deal. You also have to wonder if the Vikings are truly factoring him into their future, and if Judd Zulgad of SKOR North’s proposal ends up coming to fruition, Cousins and the Vikes may be headed for a bitter divorce.

During an episode of the Mackey and Judd Podcast this week, Zulgad said that he feels Minnesota should set a hard deadline for Cousins to decide whether or not he wants to return to the team in 2024.

“You’ve got to draw some deadlines because the worst thing that you can do is allow, for instance, the Kirk Cousins camp to dictate what your move is and to potentially screw you,” Zulgad said. “You have to be the aggressor here, and I don’t think that’s being a jerk, I think it’s being realistic and it now gives you a clear-cut path.”

More specifically, Zulgad said he felt the Vikings should set a March 1 deadline for Cousins.

Whether or not Cousins would be okay with that is anyone’s guess, but if he wants to milk as much money as he can out of his next contract, one has to imagine that he would probably not want to bypass the open market by merely accepting a deal with Minnesota at the beginning of March.

In spite of his age and injury status, Cousins would certainly have suitors should he hit free agency, and it’s entirely possible (if not likely) that another team would be willing to offer him more than the Vikings.

Prior to getting injured this season, Kirk Cousins had thrown for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games.
