Vikings Could Emerge As Landing Spot For Derrick Henry

Could the Minnesota Vikings pursue running back Derrick Henry in free agency this offseason? Max Dible of Heavy.com outlines the possibility.

Dible notes that the Vikings don’t necessarily need a high-powered rushing attack, as their lethal passing game is what truly drives their offense. As a result, Henry would not have to carry the same massive load that he has had to shoulder during his time with the Tennessee Titans.

Henry has said that he wants to sign with a contender, and while Minnesota went just 7-10 this season, it’s important to note that Kirk Cousins missed half the year with a torn Achilles.

Of course, the quarterback position is something the Vikings need to sort out before they can even thinking about contending in 2024. Will they re-sign Cousins? Will they attempt to make a play for someone like Baker Mayfield or Russell Wilson? Will they make a shrewd trade somewhere?

There is no question that Minnesota is loaded with offensive talent, with names like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison littering the roster. If the Vikings are able to stabilize things under center and sign a running back like Henry in free agency, it would give them one of the most feared offenses in football.

Henry played in all 17 games this past season, rushing for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He also caught 28 passes for 214 yards.

While the 30-year-old may not be the same elite halfback who rushed for over 2,000 yards back in 2020, he remains a productive player who could certainly bolster Minnesota’s offense, especially in a smaller role that would allow him to be more rested and, hopefully, more efficient.

Spotrac is projecting Henry to land a deal in the neighborhood of just $4.3 million annually in free agency, so even with the Vikings having somewhat limited cap space (around $30 million), they can certainly afford to bring the University of Alabama product into the fold.

We’ll see if Minnesota tries to pursue Derrick Henry this spring.
