Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill received some rather shocking news at practice earlier this week, as he discovered that his house had been set on fire.

While one room was destroyed, no one was injured, and the fire was entirely accidental.

But how was the blaze caused?

“The fire was determined to be accidental, and it was caused by a child playing with a lighter within one of the bedrooms alone,” Fire Marshall Robert Taylor said, via Omar Rodriguez Ortiz of The Miami Herald. “Thankfully, everyone was able to get out safely.”

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, commented on the incident, as well, expressing his gratitude that everyone was safe.

“He and his family are safe,” Rosenhaus said, via The Associated Press. “No one was injured No. 1, no pets, so for that, we’re very grateful. We’re very grateful to the firefighters that put the fire out. Thankfully, the fire was contained to a limited area in the home. Obviously, there’ll be some smoke and water damage. It’s very difficult for anybody obviously to have your home catch on fire, but Tyreek was handling it, he and his family, with as much poise as you could hope.”

Hill is in his second season with the Dolphins after coming over in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs back in March 2022.

In 15 games this year, Hill has hauled in 112 receptions for 1,717 yards (which leads the NFL) and 12 touchdowns. For a while, Hill looked like he was going to shatter Calvin Johnson’s single-season yardage total and possibly even eclipse 2,000 receiving yards on the season, but an ankle injury that knocked him out of the second half of Miami’s Week 14 loss to the Tennessee Titans and proceeded to keep him sidelined the following week sabotaged his efforts.

Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins are 11-5 and can capture the AFC East division title with a win over the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
