Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams has undergone surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand, via Stu Jackson of the Rams’ official team website.

Head coach Sean McVay revealed the news this week.

Williams suffered the injury during his team’s Wild Card Round loss to the Detroit Lions this past Sunday. He carried the ball 13 times for 61 yards in the defeat.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign in spite of playing in just 12 games this season, racking up 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging a robust five yards per carry. In addition, he caught 32 passes for 206 yards and three scores. He earned a Pro Bowl selection for his efforts.

Williams, who played his collegiate football at Notre Dame, was selected by Los Angeles in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

He appeared in 10 contests during his rookie year and had a very limited role, carrying the ball 35 times for 139 yards.

Williams actually got off to a bit of a rough start in 2023, finishing with under 55 rushing yards in four of his first five games. However, after that stretch, Williams broke through, posting five performances of over 100 rushing yards in six contests. He rattled off over 140 yards in three different games and tallied over 150 yards twice, topping out at 158 yards in a Week 6 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Greece native was the driving force behind a solid Rams rushing attack that ranked 11th in the NFL.

Los Angeles went 10-7 this season, snaring a Wild Card berth in the NFC. The Rams were one of the hottest teams in football during the second half of the year. They began the campaign 3-6, but proceeded to win seven of their last eight games to force their way into the playoffs.

However, Kyren Williams and Co. met a superior Lions club in the first round, sustaining a 24-23 loss.
