Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was booed by Detroit Lions fans in his return to the Motor City on Sunday night, which ended in a Wild Card Round playoff loss.

The Lions traded Stafford to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff back in March 2021. He proceeded to lead Los Angeles to a Super Bowl title in his first season with the club, which came after he didn’t win a playoff game in 12 years in Detroit.

When asked about the fans after the 24-23 defeat, Stafford didn’t have much to say.

“I’m happy for the players,” Stafford said when asked if he was happy for the city of Detroit, via the Rams’ official YouTube account. “I’m happy for those guys.”

This marked the Lions’ first playoff win since 1992, so it was obviously a big deal for the fans.

In spite of spending over a decade in Detroit, Stafford did not seem surprised by the jeering considering the circumstances surrounding the game.

“It’s a playoff game. I’m not surprised that they were excited about cheering for their team,” Stafford said. “I’m not too worried about anybody’s personal feelings toward me that was sitting in the stands.”

The 35-year-old did add that he was happy for Goff.

“He led them to a win today. I’m happy for him,” Stafford said of Goff. “I thought he played excellent today. He’s leading an offense that’s playing at a really good clip right now. [Lions fans] should be proud of him. They should be cheering for him.”

Stafford played well in the loss, going 25-for-36 with 367 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Meanwhile, Goff went 22-for-27 with 277 yards and a touchdown.

Matthew Stafford was originally selected by the Lions with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft.
