The New England Patriots could trade Mac Jones this offseason, and the Los Angeles Rams could ultimately emerge as a landing spot for the young quarterback.
Logan Reardon of NBC Sports Chicago speculates that the Rams would be a perfect fit for Jones, as Jones would be able to learn under Sean McVay in a low-pressure environment. Reardon adds that McVay runs a similar offense to San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, which would play to Jones’ strengths.
Ironically enough, the 49ers have also been mentioned as a potential destination for Jones.
Jones, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was selected by the Patriots with the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
The 25-year-old got off to a decent start to begin his NFL career, throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions during his rookie campaign. He even made the Pro Bowl, even if his numbers were a bit modest. Then, the following year, Jones began to regress, finishing with 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 picks in 14 starts.
Jones’ descent continued in 2023, where he ultimately hit rock bottom. Through 11 starts, Jones registered 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his throws and posting a passer rating of 77. He was then benched in favor of Bailey Zappe.
The general expectation is that the Patriots will part ways with Jones this coming offseason, but how much value he could actually fetch in a trade remains to be seen.
New England did shop Jones last spring, but it did not receive any offers that it felt were worth exploring.
Of course, if the Rams do make a move for Mac Jones, he would serve in a backup role behind Matthew Stafford for 2024.
Los Angeles is 9-7 and has already clinched a playoff berth. It will battle San Francisco in its regular-season finale this Sunday.
